Learning Sciences
Barbara Brown – Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning & Associate Professor, Werklund School of Education
Dr. Brown’s research is focused on research-practice partnerships and community engagement. She is also focused on technology-enhanced learning environments and online learning, which aligns well with my focus. Barbara is my doctoral supervisor and I look forward to working with her and learning from her throughout this program.
Michele Jacobsen – Professor, Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary
Dr. Jacobsen’s research focuses on learning, technology, change and innovation. She works to move towards open learning designs and participatory pedagogies, which also aligns well with my own goals. She is our professor for EDER 779.05 Introduction to Learning Sciences.
Community of Inquiry (CoI) Network
The researchers below, along with Walter Archer, developed the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework theory, methodology and instruments. This model proposes that cognitive presence, social presence and teaching presence are essential to education.

Valerie Irvine – Professor of Educational Technology
Valerie is focused on centering students in the learning environment. She has a deep understanding of modalities, including in person, blended, online and multi-access. Her work takes a social justice approach which aligns with my own.
Michael Paskevicius – Assistant Professor of Educational Technology
Michael’s research focuses on learning design practices. He is a strong advocate for open education and researches open source tools, open educational resources and open pedagogical practices, all of which are relevant to my work and my research focus.
Colin Madland – PhD Candidate, University of Victoria
Colin’s research focuses on technology-integrated assessment in higher education and the widening gap between traditional assessments and modern needs. I anticipate assessment will come into my research at one point so am interested in exploring Colin’s work further.
Ethics of Care
Nel Noddings – an American feminist, educator and philosopher known for her work in articulating an ethics of care. She argues that education should involve four components: modelling, dialogue, practice and confirmation.
Heather Robinson, Whitney Kilgore and Maha-Al Freih – a trio of researchers I have found that research and publish on the topic of care in online education.
Michelle Harrison – Senior Instructional Designer and Associate Professor, Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning
Michelle is an emerging researcher whose work often focuses on the design of virtual spaces, open pedagogical practices and online science instruction. Her collaboration with Dierdre Maultsaid is very relevant to my research topics.
Brenna Clarke Gray – Senior Coordinator, Educational Technologies, Thompson Rivers University Open Learning
Brenna is a critical educational technologist focused on ethical, accessible, and care-informed use of digital tools in education. This connects well with my interest in ethics of care in online learning.
Equity Unbound
The three researchers below are the co-founders of Equity Unbound, an intercultural curriculum that is open, connected and focused on equity.
Maha Bali – Professor of Practice at the Center for Learning & Teaching at the American University in Cairo (AUC)
Maha is a full-time faculty develop and frequent speaker on the importance of an ethic of care, which is central to my research interests. I believe there is value in adding the perspective of an educational developer to my research in this area.
Catherine Cronin – independent, open scholar who focuses on critical and social justice approaches to digital, open and higher education. She co-edited the 2023 open book Higher Education for the Good: Teaching and Learning Futures with Laura Czerniewicz.
Mia Zamora – among many things, Mia is a digital humanist and scholar who writes about how 21st century education is being transformed by digital technologies. She is committed to equity, digital literacies and data rights intercultural understanding.
